Decision on a site for new hospital by Xmas – Carlsile News & Star 3rd September 2008
AFTER years of speculation, a site for the eagerly-awaited new West Cumberland Hospital will be decided before Christmas, bosses have revealed.
The North Cumbria University Hospitals NHS Trust, formerly the acute trust, plans to replace the crumbling Whitehaven hospital with one fit for the 21st century. Funding totalling £100m has now been earmarked in the Energy Coast Masterplan, which sets out priority projects for west Cumbria.

Hospital boss starts work a month early – Carlisle News & Star 3rd August 2008
THE new chief executive of north Cumbria’s hospitals has taken up her post – more than a month early.
Carole Heatly started work at the Cumberland Infirmary on Monday even though she wasn’t due to take over until the end of October.

130 apply to quit hospitals – Carlisle News & Star 2nd September 2008
MORE than 130 of north Cumbria’s hospital workers have so far come forward to apply for voluntary severance.
Back in July, all 4,000 workers at the Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle and West Cumberland Hospital in Whitehaven were offered a cash incentive to quit their jobs.

Powers-that-be must keep facility open – Carlisle News & Star 2nd September 2008
HAVING recently been a patient in the Abbey Park Elective Orthopedic Unit, I would like to ask the powers-that-be to do all they can to ensure this excellent facility remains open.
Sister Dack and her team of nurses have worked so hard to make this unit a success.

Hospital infection discussed – Carlisle News & Star 28th August 2008
INFECTION control will be top of the agenda when hospital bosses hold their annual general meeting in Carlisle next week.
Managers from the North Cumbria University Hospitals NHS Trust, which runs both the Cumberland Infirmary and West Cumberland Hospital, will address the public meeting on Tuesday.

Business leaders calling for more focus on better health- Carlisle News & Star 28th August 2008
SENIOR leaders in the North West have welcomed a report calling on the NHS to focus more on promoting good health and wellbeing and the prevention of ill-health.\n\nLatest figures estimate that the £3 billion economic gap between the North West and England as a whole is caused by worklessness. With 9% (400,000) of the working age population on incapacity benefit, largely for preventable or manageable conditions.
