999 AMBULANCES are set to return to Burnley General Hospital.

The move is aimed at easing the pressure on East Lancashire’s A&E unit at the Royal Blackburn Hospital which is struggling to cope with the amount of patients.

HOSPITAL workers have given a lukewarm response to surveys designed to boost morale.

Out of 1,170 people given questionnaires, just 325 returned them. Many of those complained of a lack of communication between bosses and ordinary workers.

THE director of public health for NHS East Lancashire, Dr Ellis Friedman, has backed the adding of fluoride to the region’s tap water to improve dental health. The reason given is that it is unethical to withhold dental treatment for deprived people.

CUMBRIAN parents are being urged to protect their children against measles.

The call follows Health Protection Agency figures which show the number of measles cases in England and Wales has topped 1,000 in a year for the first time since 1995.

Health bosses have taken a “momentous” first step in transforming community hospital facilities across Cumbria.

The outline business case for a £14 million new hospital and health village at Cockermouth was approved by NHS Cumbria.

This paves the way to breathe new life into the previously-threatened cottage hospitals, with Brampton and Millom next on the list, followed by Keswick, Maryport, Penrith and Wigton.

VIRTUALLY every home in Cumbria is to be sent a magazine containing essential information about NHS services across the county.

The ‘Your NHS’ magazine has been produced by NHS Cumbria and is being sent to more than 200,000 homes in the county over the next two months. As well as useful contact numbers for NHS services, the magazine includes advice on how to stay healthy over the winter months.

Waiting lists for NHS dentists in Wyre and Fylde have reduced by 95 per cent in the last year.

NHS North Lancashire say they have cut the back log of people waiting to access an NHS Dentist from 6,000 people to less than 300 over a 12 month period.

A NEW TV advertising campaign could help reduce Bury’s alarming toll of six deaths a week from smoking-releated diseases.

Timed to air in the early evening when both parents and their children are most likely to be watching together, the adverts will hopefully trigger discussion and motivate parents to use local NHS Stop Smoking Services.
