Church grabs chance to attack birth control pill – The Guardian 7th January 2009

Roman Catholic leaders have pounced on a “confession” by one of the inventors of the birth control pill who has said the contraceptive he helped create was responsible for a “demographic catastrophe”.

In an article published by the Vatican this week, the head of the world’s Roman Catholic doctors broadened the attack on the pill, claiming it had also brought “devastating ecological effects” by releasing into the environment “tons of hormones” that had impaired male fertility.

Warning over ‘third-hand smoke’ – BBC Health News 6th January 2009

Many people are unaware that even smoking away from babies or pregnant women presents a risk, according to US research.

Poisons in cigarette smoke can linger on fabrics or hair, but a survey of 1,500 households found that fewer than half of smokers knew this.

Stethoscope ‘hears’ silent heart disease – BBC Health News 6th January 2009

Despite advances in medicine that make many heart conditions treatable, the absence of effective, early diagnosis often leads to sudden, unexpected deaths.

In the Irish Republic, where two people under the age of 35 die from cardiac ailments every week, scientists are working on a new stethoscope that picks up a wider range of heart sounds.
