With the new journals available from Ingenta online, we thought it would be
useful to share with you the secret of where to type in your Athen’s password if you go there direct! On the right hand side of the screen you’ll see the login. The Athens login link is hidden below the Go button.
Likewise if the journal you are trying to use is stubborn and tries to claim your hard earned money from you and you know that the Fade Library subscribe to it and you have an Athens password from us, use this link to remind it you have legitimate access.
While you’re on Ingenta, check out the RSS Feed options for the journals. As ever we’re excited about that kind of thing but do realise that not everyone else is. Don’t know anything about RSS, check out our post on ‘What is this RSS Thing?’
Remember you can always ask us for some training if you work in Liverpool PCT in how to use the electronic resources available to you to best effect. Just fill in the contact form below and we’ll arrange a training session.

In the North West we’ve enjoyed access to JAMA full text for a little while but now the Archives Journals are available to all with coverage from 1998 onwards. The usual challenge from Fade on the use of e-journals to ‘Fill yer boots’ applies!
- JAMA (Journal of the American Medical Association)
- Archives of Dermatology
- Archives of Facial Plastic Surgery
- Archives of General Psychiatry
- Archives of Internal Medicine
- Archives of Neurology
- Archives of Ophthalmology
- Archives of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery
- Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine
- Archives of Surgery
To use them you’ll need your Athens password from the NHS. (If you work in the North West and don’t have an NHS Athens Password this link will let you apply for one)
If you need training in the use of electronic resources and you work for Liverpool PCT use the contact form below to contact the library.

You’ve done the search, you’ve got the best possible of citations, even better we have it available as an e-journal from the Fade Library so you click on the link and sure enough you are whisked away to the place you can download the reference. Then the journal in question demands money with menaces and won’t spit out the full text. What are you going to do?
- Look around the screen for a link that mentions either logging-in or Athens log in and remind the journal that you have an Athens password - just clicking on the link usually does the trick (if it’s just a log-in link it might lead to an Athens log-in link).
- Call us at Fade (you can find our number here) and we’ll talk you through it
If you don’t have an Athens password from the NHS and you work for the NHS in the North West you can apply for one here.
Athens Password? I’m Confused! August 30, 2007

One of the most frequent things you will come across with electronic resources is the need to have an Athens password.
What is an Athens password?
All it is, is a way of identifying the electronic resources to which you are entitled to access. Consequently you might have one from the NHS (register here if you work in the NHS in the North West) and/or one from an academic institution your are currently studying at. The resources available to you will differ depending where the Athens password comes from and depending what that institution has bought for you to access.
I’ve lost/can’t remember my password, what do I do?
If you work for Liverpool PCT, give us a call on 0151 285 4493 and we can sort it out for you then and there. If you work elsewhere and you’re reading this then ask your local librarian (in the health sector the HLISD Directory will help you find their details).
I’ve found the best article ever but my Athens password won’t let me read it, what do I do?
You’ve probably found something that you aren’t entitled to use with your password. Contact the library on 0151 285 4493 or contact us using the form at the botom of the post.
I’ve expired, what do I do?
Contact the library on 0151 285 4493 (or use the form below) and we’ll sort it if you work for Liverpool PCT, if not contact your local librarian using the HLISD Directory.
