We get asked about places to search for grey literature and haven’t yet blogged about the OpenSIGLE - System for Information on Grey Literature in Europe which provides open access to SIGLE bibliographical references of reports and other grey literature (GL) produced in Europe.
OpenSIGLE combines the ressources of major European information and document supply centres who have joined together in an association known as EAGLE : European Association for Grey Literature Exploitation.  It’s worth noting that the British Library resigned from EAGLE in 2003.

Each centre is responsible for collecting grey literature produced in its own country and for providing details of it

In the North West we’ve enjoyed access to JAMA full text for a little while but now the Archives Journals are available to all with coverage from 1998 onwards. The usual challenge from Fade on the use of e-journals to ‘Fill yer boots’ applies!

To use them you’ll need your Athens password from the NHS. (If you work in the North West and don’t have an NHS Athens Password this link will let you apply for one)

If you need training in the use of electronic resources and you work for Liverpool PCT use the contact form below to contact the library.

medworm2.gifIt’s always useful to remember that Google isn’t the only search engine on the block.  There are loads of them out  there and you should always use more than one for an internet search.  When we come across one we’ve not used before and like the look of we’ll let you know.  MedWorm is a search engine and RSS provider service. It collects updates from over 4500 authoritative data sources (growing each day) via RSS feeds. From the data collected, MedWorm provides new outgoing RSS feeds on various medical categories that you can subscribe to, via the free MedWorm online service, or another RSS reader of your choice like MyUpdate on NLH. The advantage of haveing a search tool using RSS is the speed of update and the ability to create a feed from a search makes this an interesting tool.

If you don’t know what RSS is you can check out the description on MedWorm itself or our post on ‘What is this RSS Thing?’. Alternatively if you work in Liverpool PCT you can ask on of the library staff to train you in the use of RSS to help you stay up-to-date.

If you want some training, give the library a yell using the contact form below.

….and if you’re a librarian don’t forget to check out LibWorm!

PCT Athens Use September 27, 2007

What do librarian’s talk about at meetings?  No it’s not some dodgy library joke but a way of introducing some facts about Liverpool PCT’s use of Athens authenticated resources.  These are the electronic resources that you can access.

In 2006 our use increased by 48.2% across the PCT (9048 sessions) which made us the highest using PCT in the North West.  This equates to around 25 log-ins a day.

1958 of the sessions were using the National Library for Health (again we were the top PCT user in the North West for this resource).

What’s all the train spotting mean?  Well clearly as a PCT we’re improving our use of the available evidence to deliver evidence based services.  So congratulations to all of you.  If you have yet to get an Athens password and you work for Liverpool PCT you can request one here.

If you need some training in making the most of the electronic resources available to you using your NHS Athens password ust the contact form below.
